Pike Road business fired up about fireworks

PIKE ROAD, Ala. (WSFA) – There’s just something about filling up the night sky with color.

“My parents always had fireworks for the 4th of July,” said SIP Fireworks owner Kenny Claxton.

Last year, Americans spent $2.3 billion on fireworks. Whether it’s a huge shower of light or just a single sparkler, it’s one of the things that makes July 4th so special. For fireworks stands, this time of year is wild.

“The 3rd and the 4th, it’s just wall to wall people. It’s bananas, absolute bananas.”

For a lot of folks, it brings back childhood memories.

“The loudness, the sound of something thumping, and the explosions in the air with all the lights and color has always intrigued me.”

There are the old traditionals.

“The firecrackers, Roman candles, and bottle rockets are your staples.”

And always something new.

“They’ve gotten so technical, now they have a shell that explodes in the air and can spell words.”

The folks at SIP Fireworks do their homework.

“I buy products from two different companies. Before I buy it, I watch videos of everything in here. I cherry pick the best stuff from both companies.”

From $1 up to $160, there’s a lot to choose from.

“I like to say that we make memories here. The fireworks are just the tools we use to build those memories.”

Whether the economy is up or down, these things always seem to boom.

“No matter where you are, or where you are in life, if you like fireworks, somehow you’ll find a way to buy them. They kind of sell themselves really.”

The 4th of July isn’t the end of the light shows. These fireworks stands are seasonal businesses, open from June 20th through July 8th. So, you still have a chance to grab some. Or you can wait until the next season which starts December 15th and goes into early January. SIP Fireworks has one location at 14027 Vaughn Road in Pike Road, and another at 4512 Stillbridge Road in Equality.
