Pitt County Public Schools host transportation job fair in Greenville

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – As students enjoy their summer break, Eastern Carolina school officials are working to ensure they have enough bus drivers for the upcoming school year.

At the Pitt County Public Schools job fair, held at the Pitt NC Works Career Center in Greenville, individuals lined up for interviews. Transportation Director Richard Hutchinson outlined the necessary qualifications for prospective bus drivers.

“You need a commercial driver’s license (CDL) and a school bus endorsement. Those are the two endorsements we need so folks can immediately hop on and start driving a bus,” Hutchinson said.

In addition to bus drivers, the district is hiring for other roles, including safety assistant, mechanic, and bookkeeper.

Adrianna Carney, a retiree seeking extra income, expressed her interest in working with children. “I just need something to do with my time during the day. I can’t find any better way but to be around kids,” Carney said.

Pitt County Public Schools aims to fill 20 bus driver positions for the 2024-2025 academic year. Other school districts in the region are also seeking drivers, with Nash County schools needing 15, Washington County needing 10, and Lenoir County also needing 15.

Hutchinson highlighted the competitive salary and benefits for bus drivers.

“Bus drivers start at $16 an hour. Benefits vary based on the position and hours worked, but include health, vision, retirement, and holiday pay,” he said.

Both full-time and part-time positions are available. Interested applicants can apply online at www.pittschools.org.
