Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro XL Recorded The Lowest Temperatures Against iPhone 15 Pro Max & Others In A New Battery Drain Test, But Runtime Was Below Average
Google bumped up the battery capacities on the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL, along with adding a more efficient Tensor G4 to help both flagships last longer. However, in the latest battery drain test, what surprised us the most was seeing that both of the smartphones had the lowest recorded temperatures against competitors like the OnePlus 12, Galaxy S24 Ultra, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max, despite not impressing in the runtime category.
Galaxy S24 Ultra had the highest recorded temperature from the battery drain test, with the iPhone 15 Pro Max once again, lasting the longest
A series of tests were performed by the YouTube channel TechDroider to really hammer the battery on the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and the other flagships. Temperature readings were taken at different intervals to see how hot each device got, and you will be surprised to check out the results. The first handset to power down was the Pixel 8 Pro, lasting for only 8 hours and 39 minutes. However, it had the second-lowest temperature of any flagship that was a part of this test, reaching 41.2 degrees Celsius.
The Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL feature a 4,700mAh and 5,060mAh battery, respectively, and despite this difference, both smartphones powered down at nearly the same time, lasting for 10 hours and 25 minutes, making it a significant bump compared to the Pixel 8 Pro’s endurance. What is interesting to note here is that both models had the lowest temperature out of any device tested, touching 40.9 degrees Celsius. It is important to note that the base Pixel 9 achieved this feat while being the only model from Google this year to ship without a vapor chamber.
Speaking of vapor chambers, the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s robust cooling solution did not prevent it from reaching a toasty 50.4 degrees Celsius, but fortunately, these high temperatures did not adversely affect its battery endurance, as it lasted for 10 hours and 47 minutes. Of course, who can forget the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which outlasted all of its competitors, sporting a runtime of 11 hours and 44 minutes, with its thermals recording a figure of 44.6 degrees Celsius.
The low temperatures of the Pixel 9 Pro XL were exhibited in a previous gaming performance test, where Google’s flagship did not exceed 37 degrees Celsius, but it barely helped matters as the Tensor G4 was still slower than a two-year-old Tensor G2 when running Genshin Impact. In short, Google has successfully nailed the thermals of its flagship lineup. Now, all that remains is tweaking the performance side of things, but that will most likely happen next year with the Pixel 10 launch.
