SOUTH POINT, Ohio (WSAZ) – Planet Fitness is inviting teenagers into its gyms free of charge this summer.

Starting this Saturday, the nationwide chain will be offering complimentary summer membership to any high schooler between the ages of 14 and 19.

“Where it’s free, it allows everyone to participate in it,” said Braeden Hammar, club manager of the South Point Planet Fitness.

Hammar says they’ve already had a big response to the free memberships.

“A ton of kids, we’ve got a lot of kids in the area, especially being this close to West Virginia,” he said.

Taking away a cost barrier can give teens a healthy outlet during the summer.

“There are so many studies about how exercise influences our brain chemistry, our physical makeup. It’s just a really good benefit,” said Hammar. “Even if it’s just coming in and walking on the treadmill 5–10 minutes a day, as long as you’re moving, getting your blood flowing, it’s pretty positive.”

The gym can also be great as a social outlet.

“Some kids may not live right next door to each other and school is where they hang out the most. This allows them to hang out with their friends, work out with their friends,” said Hammar. “They can come in here instead of sitting at home. If they’re younger, they may not have a job to go to every day. This opens another thing for them.”

All teens who meet the age criteria are eligible to join the promotion even if they already have an existing Planet Fitness membership. Those who currently pay for access to the gym can freeze their accounts and sign up for the program.

Teens can sign up online or on the Planet Fitness app.

Teens under the age of 18 need a parent or guardian to come in and sign up for them.
