(NEWSnet)  — National gym chain Planet Fitness is hiking the cost of its basic membership for the first time in nearly 30 years.

A no-frills membership for new customers will be $15 a month, up from $10 a month.

The price hike will go into effect this summer.

Current members, who joined at $10 per month, will continue to pay that amount until the membership expires. The “classic” membership only allowed access to one home location.

One thing that’s not changing is the Planet Fitness “Black Club” membership. That’s the $25 tier that lets members visit any club.

Company executives, however, say they may also begin testing higher prices for that plan.

The membership hike comes as the company focuses on saving money and recovering after the pandemic.
