MEQUON — After Mequon’s Ace Hardware earlier this year filled more than half of the former Pick ‘n Save building at 11300 N. Port Washington Road that had been vacant for over a decade, it appears the city of Mequon may have found its newest tenant to occupy the remaining 15,000-plus square-foot space.
Mequon’s Planning Commission OK’d Black Duck Partners’ request for a conditional use grant to operate a Planet Fitness, an international fitness franchise with more than 2,500 facilities in six countries. The Neenah-based company operates 128 locations, including 20 in Wisconsin.
According to information presented during the Sept. 23 meeting, the proposed activities of the use will fit the character of the surrounding area, as the parcel is zoned B-2, which allows fitness centers as a conditional use. The fitness center would be open Monday through Sunday, 24 hours per day, seven days a week and 365 days per year, with an estimated 15 employees during the busiest shift.
City staff noted that the site has ample parking to meet peak demand and that the city of Mequon Police Department did not have any objections to the 24-hour fitness center if they comply with the staffing and security plans.
It is unclear when the gym would open.
