Play ball! Beloved ‘Backyard Sports’ video games to return

Get ready to flashback to your childhood, because Backyard Sports video games are back.

Playground Productions announced Tuesday that it is reviving the series of kid-friendly sports games “in the coming months.”

It also released a trailer featuring a suburban neighborhood, the clubhouse, Steele Stadium and iconic original characters like Pablo Sanchez and Stephanie Morgan.

Film, TV, and merchandise is also expected to be part of the revival.

“We’re incredibly excited to reintroduce Backyard Sports to a new generation of players,” Playground Productions CEO Chris Waters said in a statement.

“We’re taking great care to preserve the look and feel that made the original games so special while updating them with modern features and gameplay that today’s audience expects. I can’t wait for fans to see what we’re building on the Playground.”

The Backyard Sports series began in 1997 with the release of Backyard Baseball before expanding to basketball, football, hockey, and skateboarding.

New games haven’t been released since 2015 and are now viewed as nostalgic parts of childhood for a generation of today’s gamers.

“’Backyard Sports’ is more than just a game; it’s a cherished part of childhood for millions of people,” said Backyard Sports creator and Playground Productions founder and CEO Lindsay Barnett in a statement.

“I look at media as the largest classroom in the world. As such, our goal is to produce meaningful content that not only entertains but also educates and inspires. The return of ‘Backyard Sports’ is the perfect embodiment of that goal.”

Talk about a revival intensified among fans after former Eagles center Jason Kelce said on his podcast that he was interested in trying to bring it back.

A Playground Productions spokesperson told IGN that Kelce is “isn’t directly involved in this relaunch,” but acknowledged that Kelce represents an “audience of people that, to this day, fondly remember Backyard Sports as a staple game with iconic characters beloved by many.”
