Police arrest man for allegedly stealing motorized shopping cart from area retail store

ROME- A man is accused of stealing a motorized shopping cart from a local retail store, authorities are reporting.

It happened Monday afternoon shortly after 3:30 p.m., according to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office. 

Deputies were dispatched to Walmart in the City of Rome, regarding a larceny complaint.

Dispatch provided a suspect description and advised responding law enforcement personnel that the suspect was traveling west bound on Rome-Taberg Road in a stolen motorized shopping cart.

Shortly after, deputies conducted a citizens stop of a male fitting the suspect’s description, along with an electric shopping cart. The male was detained and further investigation ensued.

As a result, officials via the Criminal Investigation Unit say that Austin T. Johnson, 35, was charged with felony Grand Larceny in the fourth degree.

Johnson was transported to the LEB for processing and then was released with an appearance ticket, returnable to Rome City Court at a later date.
