Police: Man who barricaded himself in RV at travel center wanted for 2019 child sex abuse

STATESVILLE, N.C. (WBTV) – Thanks to new evidence, officers with the Statesville Police Department were able to make an arrest in a 2019 sex abuse case involving a young child.

Due to the age of the child at the initial age of reporting and the information disclosed, police said the case couldn’t be prosecuted.

But in June of 2024, officers were contacted by the Iredell County Department of Social Services with new information from the child.

They were re-interviewed and the case was reopened.

Following an investigation, charges were taken out against 60-year-old Steven Joseph Borek of Concord.

Members of the US Marshals Services – Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force tried to serve the warrants to Borek on Wednesday, but he allegedly barricaded himself inside of an RV at the Salisbury Pilot Travel Center.

After a standoff, law enforcement made forced entry and found him on the ground with a self-inflicted knife wound to the neck.

Borek was taken to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and is expected to survive.

He was charged with six counts of first-degree statutory sex offense and six counts of indecent liberties.
