Metro Nashville police have padlocked a North Nashville business after they said officers responded to the store more than 400 times over the last five years for gun violence, assaults and other crimes.
Officers raided the Star Market in the 1600 block of Buchanan Street early Monday morning. A city work crew hung two banners from the roof of the business designating it “closed by court order.”
“The community is sick and tired of this kind of activity,” Chief John Drake said. “They’re sick and tired of the quality of life kind of problems, sick and tired of gunfire, sick and tired of not being able to have peace of mind, and today we’re hoping to bring some of that peace back.”
Drake said police met with the owners of the store in August 2022 to encourage them to intervene in the crimes at and around the business. Still, the calls continued.
“The owners were told about the activities,” Drake said. “They were given a chance to clean up the activities, and since then, we’ve had no less than 60 incidents of the same type of activity. It just has not slowed down.”
Police closed the business by court order under the state’s public nuisance law.
The business’ owners are also under investigation, Drake said.
As officers raided the Star Market, they also conducted a search of the F&B Mart on Clarksville Highway, which is under the same ownership as the Star Market.
“They were taking in illegal items, stolen items and reselling them,” Drake said. “So we’re going to have money laundering and other charges that are going to come their way.”
