Portland’s Union Station ready for busy holiday travel season

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – The holiday travel season has arrived, and Amtrak reports that it has seen an increase in passengers.

Compared to traveling by car or plane, passengers told FOX 12 they prefer to travel by train.

“It’s relaxing, so if you have the time, it’s a nice way to travel,” said Harold Nelson, who was on his way to Montana to spend Thanksgiving with his family.

Even though Amtrak has reported an increase in passengers, travelers like Nelson said that compared to an airport, traveling by train is considerably less stressful.

While many people are traveling for Thanksgiving, others are arriving in Portland by train to see the city.

“I took a bus to Seattle. There, I took a train to Portland…” said Summer Xiao, who is visiting Portland from China. “This is the city of books, I like it.”

“Train stations are always a beautiful place with people coming and going,” said Audrey Salido, who is visiting from San Diego.

Whether it’s the nostalgic sound of the train whistle, or the convenience of saving money on gas or parking, passengers said there’s nothing quite like traveling by train.

“People come and go and time flies… and you can feel that when you take a train,” Xiao said.
