PREP FOOTBALL: Spartans overtake D-NH; Mustangs topple Comets



GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center football team scored 21 unanswered points to overcome an early defecit to defeat Dike-New Hartford 21-7 on Friday night in the season opener.

The Spartans captured the win over the Wolverines for the fifth time in the last six meetings, turning to junior quarterback Judd Jirovsky. Jirovsky finished 10-for-13 passing for 189 yards and two touchdowns, both going to senior wideout Tiernan Vokes. Vokes had seven grabs for 122 yards, while Devin Hinders had three catches for 67 yards.

Jirovsky also led the Spartans in rushing with 12 carries for 48 yards and a touchdown to go with a two-point conversion run. Brody Zinkula added 42 rushing yards and Pete Lebo had 34 more.

Lebo led the Grundy Center defense with 5.5 tackles, including one for loss.

Dike-New Hartford’s lone scoring play accounted for 40 of its 183 yards of offense, as Colin Meester connected with Devin Lotts for a touchdown pass in the first quarter.

EAST MARSHALL 19,BCLUW 7

CONRAD — East Marshall football claimed its fifth win in the last six games of the series by beating BCLUW 19-7 on Friday night.

The Mustangs scored 13 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to overcome a 7-6 deficit.

East Marshall senior Drew Wheater rushed 17 times for 157 yards and two touchdowns, and Xavier Slifer got 55 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.

East Marshall quarterback Jake Farrington finished 5-for-12 for 71 yards and an interception, with Eli Burns leading the receivers with three catches for 50 yards.

BCLUW’s touchdown came from Wyatt Gould on a 5-yard run in the third quarter, and the extra-point kick by Owen Myers put the Comets on top.

BCLUW quarterback Carson Wayman was 7-for-11 passing for 41 yards and three interceptions — one each for Burns, Farrington and Blake Neuroth. Eathan Petermeier picked up 47 rushing yards on nine carries, and Gould ended with 21 yards and a score.

Wheater and Wyatt Stalzer led the East Marshall defense with 8.5 tackles each, and Shaston Gummert added seven stops.

Emmett Petermeier led BCLUW with 7.5 tackles, including one for loss. Myers had an interception and Lucas Vibbard recovered a fumble.

NEVADA 33, WEST MARSHALL 7

NEVADA — Nevada gained 396 yards of total offense in a 33-7 victory over the West Marshall football team in Friday’s season opener.

A balanced Cubs attack saw tailback Anthony Eaton rush 23 times for 206 yards and all five Nevada touchdowns. Quarterback Connor King was 14-for-24 passing for 184 yards but four interceptions, resulting in West Marshall’s lone touchdown of the game.

Kinnick Geers picked off three passes for the Trojan defense, returning one for a score, and Caden Pfantz also had an interception.

West Marshall quarterback Michael Lechnir rushed for 111 yards to lead the Trojans, while Ben Gonzalez added 40 yards. Lechnir finished 4-for-12 passing for 40 yards and two interceptions. Holden Simms had one grab for 15 yards to lead the Trojan pass-catchers.

Shane Hanford and Lechnir had eight tackles apiece to lead the West Marshall defense, and Gonzalez had 7.5 stops.

ROLAND-STORY 47, SOUTH TAMA 0

STORY CITY — Roland-Story stomped the South Tama football team for the second year in a row, topping the Trojans 47-0 in Friday’s season-opening game.

The host Norsemen led 17-0 at half before busting the game open with 21 points in the third quarter alone.

South Tama’s offense was limited to 95 yards of total offense, with senior quarterback Cody Blocker going 7-for-12 passing for 88 yards. Nick Upah had two catches for 66 yards to lead the Trojans.

Marcus Bear had 10 tackles, including three for loss, and one quarterback sack to pace the STC defense. Blocker and Upah both added a sack, while Tyrus Clegg had a 43-yard interception return for the Trojans.

HUDSON 18, NORTH TAMA 0

TRAER — The North Tama offense was limited to 78 yards of offense in a season-opening 18-0 loss to Hudson on Friday night.

The visiting Pirates piled up 215 yards rushing and 134 passing. Quarterback Kiean Crile had 24 carries for 120 yards and a touchdown, while he was 5-for-14 passing for 134 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

The Redhawks musted just three yards rushing, while senior quarterback Kolt Knaac was 9-for-23 passing for 75 yards and an interception. Josh Dostal had four catches for 40 yards, and Tyrus Luker had three grabs for 31 yards.

Gavin Rausch led the North Tama defense with nine tackles, including 1.5 for loss. Kayler Morris and Clayton Williams both got an interception, and Griffin Hall had a fumble recovery for the Redhawks.
