Prep sports roundup: Esky earns road sweep over Negaunee, Brave fall to Hematites
ESCANABA — Volleyball and soccer action wasn’t hard to find across the U.P. on Tuesday. Here’s how area teams did on the road.
Volleyball
Escanaba 3, Negaunee 0
All 14 available members of the Eskymo roster saw game action in a 25-20, 25-19, 25-23 road win over the Miners.
Harlee Coolman led the orange and black with 31 digs while adding a pair of aces and a kill. Clara Braun racked up a team-best 11 assists while adding seven digs. Katey Lamb earned 22 digs and three kills. Lily Nelson contributed five kills, a dig and an ace. Landry Bray added two digs. Susie Moberg churned a team-best 12 kills and added a dig. Addison Noblet earned a pair of kills and digs. Mary Kate Tourangeau had six assists and three digs. Brooklyn Beauchamp added a kill and a dig. Bet Montal finished with three kills and a dig. Breleigh Reighart had six digs and an ace. Grayson LaMarche tallied four kills, a dig and a block. Ava Stalboerger added two kills and two digs.
The Eskymos host Gladstone at 7 p.m. on Sept. 24.
Ishpeming 3, Gladstone 1
The Braves walked into Ishpeming and fell to the Hematites 19-25, 18-25, 25-22, 17-25.
Lillie Johnson totaled six kills. Alli Larson distributed 14 assists. Adie Tryan earned 19 digs. Lucy DeGroot finished 8 of 9 from the service line with five aces.
The Braves travel to Escanaba on Sept. 24 for their next game.
Mid Peninsula 3, Hannahville 0
The Wolverines got the best of the Soaring Eagles with a 27-25, 25-16, 25-11 win.
Abbigale Klee earned three kills, two aces, two digs and a block for the Wolverines. Deziray Casey had five aces, three digs, a kill and an assist. Gallie Haring finished with nine digs, three kills and two assists. Hope Brunngraeber had 12 digs, six assists, four aces and two kills. Madelyn Lofquist added seven assists, four kills, an ace and a dig. Payton Latvala finished with seven aces, seven kills and three digs. Tessa Lofquist exited the game in the first set’s opening points due to an ankle injury.
“Payton stepped up when Tessa went out,” Mid Pen coach Emily Kayser said. “(Payton’s) serving and net play was strong.”
The Wolverines host North Central at 6 p.m. on Sept. 24.
Big Bay de Noc 3, Munising Baptist 0
The Black Bears kept rolling in Northern Lights League action with a 25-3, 25-9, 25-3 win over the Bobcats.
“(Munising Baptist) has a young team, and I give them a lot of credit for the work they’re putting in,” Black Bears head coach Angie Carley said. “We happened to have some really great servers tonight and that’s what helped us with those leads. We put girls in positions they don’t normally play and they did a great job.”
Destiny Bleau finished with nine aces and two kills. Victoria Durrance earned seven aces and a kill. Cali Miller totaled four aces, a dog and an assist. Charlee Klink: had five aces and four assists. Tamra Stoken earned five aces and a kill. Kelsey Frankovich added two digs and Alexus Paupore had a dig.
Soccer
Big Bay de Noc 4, Munising Baptist 3 (shootout)
The Black Bears got on top quickly with two goals by Nick Desjarden. The rest of the first half saw Munising add a goal and Parker Pederson for the Bears add another to bring it to a 3-1 score at half. The second half was all Munising adding a lot of shots on net and eventually tying the game with a penalty shot and a scramble goal around the net. The teams would end tied and head to a shootout. BBdN’s Joey Rochefort netted the lone shootout goal for the win.
The Black Bears travel to Beaver Island on Friday for a soccer/volleyball two-day weekend matchup.
