Princess Kate’s top Wimbledon fashion moments

The Wimbledon Tennis Championships are one of the highlights in the annual British sporting calendar and bring celebrities and high profile figures from around the world to their famous London courts each year, including members of the royal family.

Among the royals, Princess Kate is perhaps the most avid tennis fan, attending Wimbledon matches before her marriage to Prince William in 2011 and over successive years since then.

In 2016, Queen Elizabeth II recognized her granddaughter-in-law’s sporting passion by appointing her the patron of the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), the organization that hosts the championships each year.

As patron, Kate presents the prizes to the men’s and women’s single finalists, which have included over the years, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Marketa Vondrousova and Elena Rybakina.

Kate’s presence raises the profile of the tournament and has won her praise from fans and the fashion press, eager to get a glimpse of her celebrated Wimbledon wardrobe.

While Kate’s presence at this year’s event is not confirmed as she continues to undergo treatment for cancer, organizers have said they are “hopeful” she will be well enough to attend.

As the 2024 event gets underway, Newsweek looks at some of Princess Kate’s top Wimbledon Tennis Championship fashions to date, from sporty chic to regal statements.

2012 – Chic and Sporty

One year after her marriage to Prince William, Kate attended the Wimbledon Tennis Championships wearing a classic dress, paying homage to sporting history though its aesthetic, designed by the fashion house of Alexander McQueen.

The royal paired the look with black high heeled shoes and a clutch handbag, as well as her diamond and sapphire engagement ring that had formerly belonged to Princess Diana.

2017 – Monochrome Mood

For the 2017 event, Kate wore a monochrome look in a bold polka dot print designed by Italian fashion duo, Dolce & Gabbana. The royal paired the look with a white leather handbag from Victoria Beckham.

Another Dolce & Gabbana look was selected by Kate for the championships in 2019 where she attended the women’s singles final match with sister-in-law, Meghan Markle.

The princess wore a bespoke version of the brand’s pocket watch-applique midi dress and paired it with nude accessories, including a Dolce & Gabbana Sicily handbag.

Kate attended the men’s singles final in 2021 wearing a dress that has become a favorite among royal women around the world, including Princess Beatrice and Queen Mary of Denmark.

Kate wore the Beulah London “Ahana” dress in blush pink and accessorized with nude shoes, and embroidered handbag and floral facemask (coming soon after the COVID pandemic lockdown restrictions were lifted in Britain).

2023 – Vintage Inspiration

For the women’s singles final in 2023, Kate opted for a vintage inspired outfit, designed by one of her favorite brands, Self-Portrait.

The dress featured a built in jacket element with capped sleeves and cinched waist detail which mixed elements of 1960s and 1990s design aesthetics. Kate paired the dress with cluster pearl earrings and a pair of nude slingback heels.
