Problem Gambling Network of Ohio Offers Free Virtual Counseling

The Problem Gambling Network of Ohio has decided to offer free virtual counseling to residents since recent studies have indicated that both casino gambling and sports betting are at an all-time high.

Ohio for Responsible Gambling organization found that one in five Ohioans may suffer from a gambling addiction

A study from the Ohio for Responsible Gambling organization found that one in five Ohioans are categorized as either low-risk, moderate-risk or problem gamblers. The telehealth service launched in April.

Michael Buzzelli, associate director of the Problem Gambling Network of Ohio, said the telehealth service offers access to help so that the gambler is not required to meet someone in person.

Buzzelli said the free telehealth option is meant to help online bettors feel more comfortable. “If someone’s more likely to gamble on their phone, they may be more likely to reserve gambling treatment on their phone or on their computer as well. So, it’s also a comfort aspect,” Buzzelli said.

During a recent interview with WTOL 11 News, the Zepf Center’s gambling program manager said gambling becomes an issue when it begins affecting work, relationships, or takes over a person’s life. Individuals may also decide to gamble in order to pay off debt.

About 9 million Americans have a mild or severe issue with gambling, according to the National Council on Problem Gambling.

Problem gambling can affect anyone

“Gambling is designed to be a form of entertainment. It’s pretty widely socially accepted,” said Megan Poliquin. “It should be no different than going to see a movie at the movie theater.

“So, if you are going to gamble for any other reason other than entertainment, then those are very significant signs that things are shifting to become more problematic for you.”

Taking money from your savings accounts or using money set aside for bills to bet are red flags. Borrowing money from friends and family to gamble is another major warning sign of an addiction.

The telehealth option is also for friends and family members of those who are struggling with an addiction.

“There are services for loved ones as well, so, you can call and just talk to someone,” Buzzelli added. “You can get some other resources. [And] you can learn about things that maybe are available in your community.”

The bill to legalize sports betting in Ohio was officially passed in December 2021. However, online and retail sports betting did not launch in the Buckeye State until January 2023.
