PSA World Championships 2023-24 squash: How to watch live in Australia

Three Australian squash players, led by World Doubles Championships silver medallist Jessica Turnbull, will be in action at the PSA World Championships 2023-24, starting in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday.

Jessica Turnbull will be joined by compatriot Alex Haydon in the women’s event while Joseph White is the lone Aussie player in the men’s event. The first round of the tournament will be held on May 9 and 10.

World No. 61 Turnbull will face defending world champion Nour El Sherbini in the first round. Sherbini, ranked world No. 1, is a seven-time world champion and will be playing in front of her home crowd at the Palm Hills court in Cairo.

Jessica recently reached the second round of the Australian Open in March.

Meanwhile, Alex Haydon will take on world No. 31 Hana Ramadan of Egypt at the Shooting Club court. She finished runners-up in the Hyder Trophy 2024 in New York last week, losing to Chan Sin Yuk of Hong Kong China in the final.

Haydon, 75th in the PSA world rankings, defeated compatriot and second seed Sarah Cardwell 3-1 in the women’s final of the World Championship Oceania Qualifying Event to secure her place in the PSA World Championships 2023-24.

Joseph White was also involved in the Qualifying Event and beat Rhys Dowling 3-1 in the men’s final.

World No. 83 White will square off against world No. 39 Yahya Elnawasany of Egypt in the first round of the men’s event at the Shooting Club. The 26-year-old reached the quarter-finals of the Hyder Trophy this month.

The knockout rounds of the PSA World Championships 2023-24 will begin on May 15. The semi-finals will be held at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo on May 17 while the final will be held at the same venue on May 18.

Australia are the third-most successful nation in the history of the men’s event of the PSA World Championships, having won 37 medals including eight golds. In the women’s event, Australia are the most successful country with 48 medals, including 15 golds.

Australia’s Geoff Hunt has won four world championship titles and only Pakistan’s Jansher Khan (8) and Jahangir Khan (6) have more titles than him.

Meanwhile, Sarah Fitz-Gerald of Australia has won five women’s titles. Malaysia’s Nicol David (8) and Nour El Sherbini (7) of Egypt are the only squash players with more world championship titles than Fitz-Gerald.
