PSJA ISD Hosts National Voter Registration Day

PHARR, Texas – In celebration of National Voter Registration Day and Constitution Day, Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (PSJA ISD) hosted a special event aimed at educating high school seniors on the importance of civil engagement and the voting process. Held at the Pharr Events Center on Sept. 17, 2024, the event provided students with valuable knowledge to prepare them for their role in democracy and ensure they understand the impact of their vote in shaping the future. 

Attendees got to hear powerful remarks from PSJA Superintendent of Schools Dr. Alejandro Elias, who emphasized the importance of voting and encouraged students to take an active role in democracy. 
 
“We want our students to recognize that their voice counts, and they are the future,” said PSJA Superintendent of Schools as he addressed the seniors during his remarks. “Voting is not just a right, it’s a privilege. It’s your chance to influence decisions that shape your future. Whether it’s about education, health care, or your environment, your vote holds power. In a democracy like ours, each vote is vital, and it’s a piece of the puzzle that contributes to the bigger picture of our nation’s direction.” 

The event featured a series of engaging activities, including speeches by PSJA Student Council Class Presidents, who read moving essays about the significance of each vote. Their inspiring words encouraged their peers to understand that every vote truly counts. 
 
Also addressing attendees were leaders from the cities of Pharr, San Juan, and Alamo, who shared their insight on civic engagement and urged students to take pride as future voters. 
 
A highlight of the day was a special panel discussion featuring local and county leaders, who answered students’ questions about the voting process, the requirements needed to vote, and the importance of casting an informed vote. This interactive Q&A session provided students with the tools and understanding needed to make educated decisions at the polls.

“Voting is one of the most important ways we can make a difference in our community,” said Alexandra Benavidez, PSJA North Early College High School senior. “This event opened my eyes to how much power we have as young adults. The event was all about understanding what we believe in and using our votes to support leaders who represent those values. I feel more confident now about making my voice heard.” 
 
PSJA ISD is proud to host events that provide students with the education and inspiration they need to become engaged and informed citizens of their community. As part of the district’s commitment to developing strong leaders, PSJA ISD continues to promote civic education and involvement in the democratic process.
