Qualcomm’s 3rd Gen Oryon CPU Cores Coming To Snapdragon X “AI PC” Platforms In 2025, 2nd Gen Targeting Mobile Segments

The San Diego chipmaker did surprise us at the start of the year by unveiling the highly competitive Snapdragon X Elite SoCs, targeting the AI PC market. The new chips did turn out to be quite a “banger” for the company, with the Snapdragon X Elite lineup receiving widespread adoption from mainstream notebook integrators, potentially posing Qualcomm’s new chip solutions as a viable alternative to the x86 options out there.

At the recent “Investor Day” conference, Qualcomm expressed intentions to upscale its PC business by introducing “more compelling” options.

Starting, Qualcomm did reveal a “slight slack” in business, re-evaluating its “50% market share” target from 2027 to 2029, and the reason behind this extension is associated with the fact that Qualcomm wants its foundations to be set much stronger. The firm has revealed that by 2029, they expect a “30%-50%” market share in the “non-x86 AI notebook” segment, which is the ARM market. The chipmaker intends to compete directly with Apple, putting its “x86 dominance” ambitions on the sidelines.

Interestingly, the firm has targeted revenue of $4 billion from the AI PC segment by 2029, which almost translates into a YoY revenue of $1 billion. These are “strong” numbers, given that competitors like Intel and AMD can achieve such figures within a few months. This shows that Qualcomm’s SoCs and demand aren’t that high compared to what an individual retailer has perceived.

Another point to mention here is that Qualcomm is now eying for the “budget segment” to increase its revenue, and the firm’s CFO has reiterated its commitment to introduce notebooks within the $600 price range, with its entry-level SoCs that are yet to be announced.

The core issue with Qualcomm’s existing notebooks is that they are priced relatively higher than what they bring into the market, especially when stacked against alternatives. Hence, by introducing budget solutions, Qualcomm can very well attract attention.

Being an investors’ conference, Qualcomm didn’t disclose much on the “technical” side of things, apart from teasing its third-generation Oryon CPU cores, which are said to offer much higher performance than its previous generation, although official numbers weren’t disclosed yet.

The company plans to launch 3rd Gen Oryon CPU cores for the Snapdragon X “AI PC” platforms by 2025 and is currently in development. Being a new entrant in the notebook segment, Qualcomm has surely made serious progress when it comes to market adoption rates, but the firm still needs a lot to do.
