Radford continues development plans for new West End business park

RADFORD, Va. (WDBJ) – The old Foundry, now known as the West Radford Commerce Park, was Radford’s century-old industrial base for iron and coal that shut down in 2013.

The 80-acre property had been nearly untouched until the city purchased it last August with big plans to create more businesses, jobs and make the West End side of the community boom.

Economic development director Kim Repass said they are working on finding a large manufacturing company, like a water or electrical user to take over.

”This property is close to the railroad line, it’s close to Interstate 81 and 77. We have talent pools from the various universities in our area. This is a big asset for our community as we move forward with redevelopment,” said Repass.

With lots of environmental studying and a new $3.5 million business grant, the city is beginning to make their vision come to life.

“It’s going to work on removing some soil that’s been contaminated a small area on that property. It’s also going to entail removing a concrete slab, which is about 200,000 square feet,” said Repass.

By having a large business park, city leaders are hoping that it will also attract new shops and restaurants.

“Revitalizing this property, we hope, is going to bring additional jobs. It’s going to bring additional restaurants and the different businesses to that West End area of our community,” said Repass.

The soil removal process is set to be completed in early 2025.

While there is still much to be done, the city hopes that the park is industry ready by 2026.
