Ranked: The World’s Top 15 Bucket List Trips, According To A New Report
What are the world’s top bucket list trips? Whether it’s visiting a far-flung destination like Bali, experiencing a natural wonder like the northern lights or exploring an iconic landmark like the Taj Mahal, travelers are dreaming big for 2025 as they seek out the best places to visit in the world—according to a new report from Go2Africa.
To uncover the world’s top bucket list experiences, the data team at Go2Africa—a South Africa-based boutique travel planner—analyzed global Google search trends. Using tools like AHREFs, the team looked at the highest search volumes for terms related to “bucket lists” over the past year. They then used this data to create a definitive ranking of the world’s most sought-after bucket list trips.
Compare this to past rankings of the top bucket list trips in stories that I’ve done in 2023 (where the Maldives topped the list), 2021 (where Dubai’s Burj Khalifa ranked number one), 2020 (where Petra, Jordan won) and 2019 (where Bali was at the top).
Bucket List Trips: The Top Destination
Coming in at the top of the list is Bali, which topped bucket lists globally. With more than 2.28 million Google searches related to bucket lists, Bali holds universal appeal, drawing honeymooners, adventure seekers, culture enthusiasts, families and more. Known as the Island of the Gods, this Indonesian paradise lures travelers with its diverse offerings: serene beaches, world-class surfing, stunning waterfalls and iconic temples. Its reputation as a spiritual hub further solidifies its place as a must-visit destination. (Yes, the Eat Pray Love effect is still going strong.)
According to the report, the second most popular bucket list experience is embarking on a wildlife safari. “At Go2Africa, we believe an African safari offers the ultimate way to immerse yourself in the continent’s rich wildlife,” wrote the authors of the report. “From the majestic lion to the elusive elephant shrew, an African safari promises a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, where every moment brings you closer to the untamed beauty of the natural world.”
Next up is the Greek island of Santorini, which is famous for its whitewashed buildings and Aegean Sea views. “Not only does the island have such beautiful buildings, but it’s also known for its volcanic beaches, lunar landscapes and breathtaking views making it the perfect place to snap a picture of two,” wrote the authors of the report.
Coming in at number four is the “Happiest Place on Earth,” Disney World in Florida. Rounding out the global top five is Bora Bora in French Polynesia, an island paradise known for overwater bungalows and turquoise lagoons.
Bucket List Trips: Trending Locations
The Go2Africa report reveals several fascinating trends in what inspires travelers worldwide.
Natural Wonders Dominate: From awe-inspiring landscapes to once-in-a-lifetime adventures, nature-based experiences rank high on bucket lists. For instance, Machu Picchu (#7 globally) is the top bucket list destination for 15 countries, including its home country of Peru. One of the Seven Wonders of the World, the ancient Incan city offers breathtaking hikes, including the classic Inca Trail. Another natural wonder ranking high on many regional lists and coming in at number 10 on the global list: the Grand Canyon.
Cities Stand Out: Urban adventures also figured high on bucket lists. New York City was named the most popular bucket list destination for 27 countries, including Argentina, Finland and Taiwan. Its iconic landmarks like the Statue of Liberty (which came in#12 globally), cultural scene and global influence make it a perennial favorite.
Bucket List Trips: Regional Rankings
The Go2Africa report also highlights regional preferences, providing insight into how geography and culture shape travel bucket lists.
Go2Africa mapped out the top bucket list trip for many countries. In Switzerland, they’re dreaming about Las Vegas. For the Vietnamese, it’s going to the Eiffel Tower. In Honduras, it’s all about the Grand Canyon. Argentinians want to come to New York City. Algerians want to see the Great Wall of China. And that’s just a small sampling.
Go2Africa also dove deep into the bucket list preferences for the United States and the United Kingdom.
United States: Americans seek out a mix of natural wonders and far-flung escapes, with the Northern Lights ranking as the #1 experience. The Grand Canyon came in number two, while Bora Bora rounded out the top three. You can see the full list of the top 15, below.
United Kingdom: Brits also dream of the Northern Lights, which landed in the top spot, followed by the Eiffel Tower, then South Africa.
