Rapid City New Year’s resolutions are about fitness of the soul

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – With the new year hours away and people drafting resolutions, people aren’t just making the promise that they’ll lose those pounds.

KOTA Territory News went out to discover ways people are looking to improve their mental health. Some of the resolutions turn out to be quite profound.

With the ball ready to drop tonight at the Hotel Alex Johnson to welcome 2025, people out on the town enjoying Tuesday’s sunshine also pondered how to make their future bright.

This would add something to their lives in the new year for some. They said they would do that by becoming more driven and determined while facing complex challenges, sharing the warmth of generosity while listening and being kind in the process, and so on.

“My New Year’s resolution revolves around kindness, grace and mercy. Kindness is the greatest gift you can give. It’s the greatest gift you receive,” Mississippi school teacher Ramona Kinney said.

Kinney also stated that being slow to speak and quick to listen enhances one’s ability to be kind to others. Listening allows one to hear someone’s story, which can lead to greater understanding and compassion.

Kinney also said making the most out of every day is essential.

“I’m out here trying to help people … try to eat and stuff, get some water because there are no water fountains out here, so they’re trying to look for some water,” Roofer Craig Chase said.

Dan Senser is battling cancer and has an inspiring answer. Not only did he speak of being more determined to squeeze all you can out of every day, like Ramona Kinney said, but he also had a simple message.

“Trying to make life better for yourself all the time,” Senser said, “Showing a lot of kindness and love to the country, world and people. Make it a better place, you know.”
