Rapid City Regional Airport expansion: will it impact next years travel?

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) – You may have heard a rumor that the Rapid City Regional Airport was going to shut down next spring, but according to airport officials, that isn’t true.

The rumor claimed the airport would be shut down for March, April, and May of next year for a complete redo of the runway.

The airport is currently in phase one of its three-phase master plan, with the reconstruction of the runway included in a future phase of the expansion. However, airport officials say reconstructing the runway isn’t going to happen that quickly.

“Even if we started on the runway today, before we even did any work on it would be likely a 6-year process until the point where we got to be able to even break ground on any kind of runway project. Runway projects really take a considerable amount of time, you can figure once you start it a decade before you’re really done with the project,” Dame said.

Dame says when they do start working on the runway, it is unlikely airport service will be disrupted.
