Recent graduates receive jobs through return of Shelby Co. mayor’s summer work program

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – More than 60 graduating high school seniors and college students will receive paid summer jobs and develop life skills thanks to the return of the Shelby County mayor’s summer work program.

Students met with Mayor Lee Harris and other Shelby County officials Friday at First Baptist Church in Binghampton for orientation.

Young people between the ages of 18 to 24 will participate in the eight-week summer intern program, which will give them paid work experience within Shelby County Government and career skills in public health, government administration, and community outreach.

Fun fact, about 10% of last year’s interns were actually hired by the Shelby County Government. Organizers say this is always a great opportunity for young people here in the county.

“We can help a young person, help them move forward,” said Reginald Milton, administrator of the Shelby County Office of Education. “That’s what we wanted someone to do for us and that’s what we should do for others.”
