Record-breaking travel for Thanksgiving holiday

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – It’s time to tune up, fuel up, and buckle up to travel for Thanksgiving. Whether you’re on the roadway or the runway, millions are expected to travel for the holiday.

Over 2 million Michiganders will travel for the holiday according to AAA Spokesperson Adrienne Woodland.

“Thanksgiving travel this year will be one of the busiest ever on record,” she said, “Have your car expected before hitting the roadway you want to check things like your tires, your battery, your engine oil and other fluids. If you are using GPS, you want to program that before you start driving.”

At the Capital Region International Airport, the Transportation Security Administration says it is prepared for the busiest Thanksgiving on record. The agency expects to screen more than 8 million people on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Sunday.

“We started to see an uptick in traffic, in people coming in and out both with taking flights but picking up people who are arriving here. So, the roadways and airports will be very, very busy this Thanksgiving,” said Katherine Japinga with Capital Region International Airport.

Japinga says preparing for a flight may differ from hopping in the car, but it is equally important.

“Giving yourself a little bit of wiggle room when it comes to your arrival just in case there are extra people. Check on your airline’s website for flight changes, cancellations, delays anything like that, that is all decided by the airlines,” said Japinga.
