Red Wings’ prospect Trey Augustine wins first World Championship start

Detroit Red Wings prospect Trey Augustine made 20 saves Friday in his first World Championship start and the United States defeated Poland 4-1 in Ostrava, Czechia.

It was the third appearance for Augustine, 19, in the tournament. He previously relieved an injured Alex Lyon and replaced an ineffective Alex Nedeljkovic.

Augustine ranks third in goals-against average (1.37) and fourth in save percentage (.929) among all goalies. He has stopped 39-of-42 shots in three games.

The Red Wings selected him 41st overall in 2023. He’s coming off a strong freshman season at Michigan State.

Brady Tkachuk (Ottawa Senators) had a goal and three assists as the U.S. improved to 3-0-1-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L), good for 10 points and second to Sweden in Group B.

Team USA outshot Poland 57-21. Poland fell to 0-0-1-4 (one point).

Cole Caufield (Montreal Canadiens) scored two goals and Michael Kesselring (Utah) scored one. Shane Pinto (Ottawa) has two assists.

Red Wings defenseman Jeff Petry had two shots and a plus-1 rating in 15:15.

The U.S. faces Kazakhstan Sunday (10:20 a.m. ET, NHL Network).
