Reggae Girl helps end Tottenham season in spectacular fashion
LONDON (CMC):
REGGAE GIRL Drew Spence produced a late stunner to cap off an uncomplicated win for Tottenham Hotspurs as they trounced West Ham United 3-1 on the final day of the Women’s Super League season.
With her side already leading 2-1, the 31-year-old midfielder curled in from the edge of the box after being set up by Jesssica Naz in the ninth minute of stoppage, putting an exclamation mark on a dominant performance at Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium yesterday.
Naz had, in the 86th, put the hosts ahead after the game was tied 1-1, when Riko Ueki levelled in the 50th to cancel out Bethany England’s fourth-minute strike, which put the hosts in front from early.
Tottenham ended the season sixth on 31 points as Chelsea retained their title by crushing Manchester United 6-0 to finish on 55 points and edge Manchester City – who won 2-1 at Aston Villa – on goal difference.
“We spoke before the game about finishing the season on a high. I knew the players were quite tired after the third game in six days while West Ham have trained for two weeks,” said manager Robert Vilahamn.
“The fans were amazing. We played some really good football, and in the end, we scored some beautiful goals as well, and ending with Drew’s goal was amazing.”
Bethany’s fifth goal in six games got Tottenham on their way, Martha Thomas finding her in the box after capitalising on a mistake from goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold.
The hosts wasted opportunities to extend their lead and were made to pay when Ueki ran on to the end of a beautiful through ball from Honoka Hayashi to finish clinically from a tight angle after the break.
After again squandering chances to break the deadlock, Spurs finally found the winner through Naz’s calm finish from inside the box before Spence put the shine on the victory.
The goal was only Spence’s second of the season.
