Registered Nurses, Retail Salespersons, and Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers, are the Top Jobs in September

MONTGOMERY – Data collected and analyzed by the Alabama Department of Labor’s Labor Market Information (LMI) Division shows that in September 2024, there were 80,827 job ads posted in Alabama, representing a monthly decrease of 3.7%.

The five occupations with the most online job ads are for Registered Nurses, Retail Salespersons, Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers, Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers, and Fast Food and Counter Workers with 13,875 ads placed for those occupations in September.

The HWOL data is compiled from all online job postings in the state, including those posted on the state’s free online jobs database, AlabamaWorks.alabama.gov, and other sources, such as traditional job boards, corporate boards, and social media sites.

In September 2024, there were 33,616 total job ads with salaries, including 8,888 jobs ads with salaries of $70,000 and above; 9,815 jobs ads with salaries in the $35-49,000 range; 5,929 jobs ads with salaries in the $50-69,000 range, and 8,984 jobs ads with salaries less than $35,000.

The top two employers posting the most online ads in September were Walmart with 2,087 ads and Huntsville Hospital with 1,122 ads. The rest of the top 10 were: UAB Medicine (861), Jack’s Family Restaurants (518), Auburn University (479), The University of Alabama at Birmingham (475), USA Health (464), Regions (447), Baptist Health (432), and The University of Alabama (427).

This month’s HWOL Occupation Focus is Electricians. Those employed in this occupation install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures and ensure that work is in accordance with relevant codes. They may also prepare sketches or follow blueprints to determine the location of wiring or equipment and to ensure conformance to building and safety codes. Typically, employees in these occupations usually need one or two years of training involving both on-the-job experience and informal training with experienced workers. A recognized apprenticeship program may be associated with this occupation. This occupation also requires a Licensed Journeyman Electrician or Provisional Electric Contractor license from the Alabama Electrical Contractors Board. The advertised median salary for Electricians in Alabama is $55,168. This occupation has 1,300 Annual Total Openings in Alabama.
