Remember to travel safe on the roads ahead of Thanksgiving

RIB MOUNTAIN, Wis. (WSAW) – AAA says a record breaking 1.4 million Wisconsinites will hit the road this Thanksgiving.

Tuesday is actually one of the busiest days to travel. Wednesday will also be a busy day. The worst time to travel will be around 1 p.m. to 5:00. If you want to save time, the best time to leave will be before 11a.m. The best time to travel will be Thanksgiving Day. The state patrol says to leave early and give yourself plenty of extra time.

“Look at 511 for delays, incidents, and whatnot, put your phone down and buckle up and watch your speed and be aware of distractions on the roadway,” said Veronica Hailey, Wisconsin State Patrol.

The State Patrol says the most common violation they see is speeding. If you’re getting out on the roads, be sure to slow down, or you could get a ticket, put down your phone, and also buckle up. The State Patrol responds the most to crashes and motor assistance during the holidays. That seat belt could save your life. They say you can help by keeping an eye on the roadways yourself, for impaired drivers and drivers who may need assistance. This is another common violation.

“We do see people not move over for emergency vehicles and we encourage everyone, slow down, be courteous, and avoid distractions to make a safe travel to your destination,” said Hailey.

If you’re traveling, remember to look out for emergency vehicles and move over for them. Follow traffic alerts and traffic apps to keep you up to date on any delays you could encounter. We will also keep you updated here on NewsChannel 7.
