Remembering Danny Wells: Former sports journalist and delegate passes away

Danny Wells was an individual so many knew well.

First, as a long-time sports journalist for The Charleston Gazette and later as a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates.

The colorful Wells died Wednesday following a lengthy illness.

Wells pounded out sports stories by the truckload for the Gazette starting in 1962. He later served as sports editor and in his final years with the paper was a popular sports columnist.

His love for people and the clattering of the newsroom war what drove Wells to work each day to do what he knew – “Write a story and go home.”

Wells retired from the Gazette in 2001.

Following his newspaper career, Wells delved into politics and represented Kanawha County in the House of Delegates for 10 years, starting in 2004.

Wells is survived by a son and daughter.

Danny Wells was 84.
