Artificial intelligence and automation are expected to add 44,000 jobs to the Michigan economy by 2028, according to a new report by Pearson, a lifelong learning company based in New Jersey.

The largest business sectors today will continue to employ the greatest number of Americans in 2028, however significant shifts will occur as job roles evolve and sectors expand or decline due to technological advancements and economic influences, according to the report.

In Michigan, the largest gains in jobs will be in computer systems engineering/architecture at 20.2 percent, the report says. Computer programmer and software systems developer jobs will increase by 16.9 percent and 16.4 percent, respectively.

Positions in retail sales (clerks, cashiers, and salespeople) are expected to decrease by a total of 35.1 percent.

“The key message is that technology is transforming jobs at a faster pace than ever before, says Dave Treat, chief technology officer at Pearson. “Every job, from nursing to manufacturing, is becoming more tech-focused, increasing the demand for workers who can blend technical expertise with industry-specific skills.

“As technology evolves, it’s opening new opportunities across all sectors, helping businesses tackle real-world challenges more effectively.”

In Michigan, the report states, the aging population is simultaneously creating workforce gaps and driving demand for jobs to support their care.

It also says automation does not necessarily mean fewer jobs — it means different jobs.

“In Michigan, the professional, scientific, and technical services sector is expected to expand its workforce by the greatest number of employees (+17.8 percent), followed by health care and social assistance (+3.8 percent). Top rising roles include systems software engineers and mechanical engineers,” the report says.
