Retro Fitness will soon close this Staten Island location: What members need to know
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Retro Fitness – which currently operates three gyms on Staten Island – has announced it will soon close its New Dorp location and is giving members several options to make a health club switch.
The 15,000-square-foot gym, which is located on the second floor of “The Plaza” at 2590 Hylan Blvd., opened in 2017 and anchors the strip mall, which also contains The Vitamin Shop, Chipotle and Carvel.
According to an employee who answered the phone at the location, the gym will officially shutter the first week of November, and members are being given the option of transferring their “home gym” location to the Richmond Avenue site in New Springville or the Veterans Road West gym in Tottenville. An email will soon be issued to gym-goers explaining how to make the switch.
Those currently belonging to the gym have been told the closure is the result of a “landlord dispute,” but the gym’s owner declined to comment. Savo Bros. Inc., the developer in charge of leasing space in The Plaza, said it was unaware of the closure until it was posted on social media.
“We were not notified of Retro’s closure, which is unfortunate, as we understood they had a solid membership,” the developer said via email.
Retro’s corporate office did not respond to a request for comment.
