Review ranks airlines, airports on punctuality

As ubiquitous as traveling by plane has become, it’s not without its share of stresses, complications and challenges.

If you’ve ever had a tight connection and suffered a delayed flight, you know how stressful it can be.

Cirium, which provides analytics on the aviation industry, has released its 2024 On-Time Performance Review, ranking airlines and airports on their punctuality and “operational performance.”

Starting in North America, the top airlines—according to Cirium—are as follows:

  1. Delta Air Lines, with 83.46% on-time arrivals and 83.74% on-time departures
  2. United Airlines, with 80.93% on-time arrivals and 81.98% on-time departures
  3. Alaska Airlines, with 79.25% on-time arrivals and 81.70% on-time departures
  4. American Airlines, with 77.78% on-time arrivals and 79.13% on-time departures
  5. Southwest Airlines, with 77.77% on-time arrivals and 76.65% on-time departures

While Delta came in first place within the U.S. ranking, globally it placed third behind Saudia and Aeromexico airlines at second and first place respectively. LATAM Airlines came in fourth and Qatar Airlines fifth on the global rankings.

“In an industry defined by operational complexity, we are extremely proud to be celebrating the airlines and airports who have provided customers the most on-time flights and best performance in 2024, acknowledging their operational excellence,” Cirium CEO Jeremy Bowen said in a press release.

The review also ranked the top performing airports, with only one American airport landing in the top five.

  1. Riyadh King Khalid International Airport in Saudi Arabia came in first at 86.65% of on-time departures
  2. Lima Jorge Chavez International Airport in Peru came in second with 84.57% on-time departures
  3. Mexico City Benito Juarez International Airport came in third with 84.04% on-time departures
  4. Salt Lake City International Airport came in fourth with 83.80% on-time departures
  5. Santiago Arturo Merino Benitez Intl Airport in Chile came in fifth with 82.84% on-time departures
