ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – The warmer drew a large crowd to southern Rochester Wednesday for an opportunity for students to compete and have fun.

The Rochester Academy for Independent Living (RAIL) hosted Unified Sports Day. RAIL is a transition school for students with special needs, helping them to learn skills to help them in all areas of life.

The event offered a wide range of outdoor sports and activities for the students including basketball and bowling.

RAIL Social Skills teacher Lori Jensen said the students were looking forward to the day and for the staff it was an emotional day to see the students out having a fun day competing.

“Well, I’ve cried twice already today,” Jensen said. “Because it’s just so heartwarming and it’s so fulfilling and that these students just warm our heart and teach us things every day and it’s just awesome. I mean, look out there, everybody’s having a blast. So how can you not be smiling from ear to ear, you know?”

This year marked the second straight year that rail has hosted this event. Jensen says she hopes the Unified Sports Day will continue for years to come.
