Rocky Point businesses looking forward to a busy summer season

PUERTO PENASCO, MX (AZFamily)Businesses in Rocky Point hope the Memorial Day weekend and summer vacations will help them continue to rebound after millions of dollars were lost during the temporary closure of the Lukeville Port of Entry.

Yvonne Couture lives in Arizona but has called Rocky Point her second home for more than forty years.

She plans to keep it that way and not just because of the water’s serene views.

“I feel safe here. All the locals are very helpful and very nice,” Couture said.

She’s seen the struggle businesses have had as a result of Lukeville’s temporary closure.

“A lot of the locals, people who are permanent here, a lot of them would bring food to the locals because they couldn’t get out. Nothing was open”, Couture said.

Mary’s Seafood was one of the businesses that felt the strain.

Desolate streets in December and January meant closed doors.

Pic Rivera was one of several employees who was affected.

“That was really hard for us because we had to close for one month and then we started working again,” Rivera said.

Manuel and his brother’s gift store along the tourist shopping strip known as Rodeo Drive also took a hard hit.

They’re bouncing back now and said shopping locally helps them and visitors.

“The price is a little bit better and in this place a lot of people make the stuff so it’s a local people make stuff. Better quality,” Perez said.

Almost all business owners said visitors are slowly starting to trickle back and they want them to know not only is it safe to visit, but it’s helping build back Arizona’s beach and those who stay to welcome all.
