In foreign as in every kind of policy, Donald Trump is fast and furiously signaling the style and substance of his second term in the White House. Based on the likely appointments known so far, here’s how that’s shaping up: China and Iran should beware; Israel can cautiously take heart; and Ukraine, we’ll get back to you.
As ever with Trump, though, the theme that dominates all these considerations is the message to the incoming minions. In his first term, Trump went through four national-security advisors, three of whom he fired and then hated when they turned against him. This time, nobody will be allowed anywhere near the administration who might either outshine or challenge the strongman behind the Resolute Desk.
