Sackets Harbor school opposes changes to gender rules on sports

WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – Sackets Harbor Central School District is against proposed changes to who can play on what sports team.

The New York State Board of Regents is proposing new rules for “Mixed Competition” and the “Athletic Placement Process.”

The proposed change would allow for male and female student-athletes to participate on the same team if a school did not offer separate male and female teams at that school.

Currently, if a student-athlete wants to play a sport that’s predominantly of a different gender, parents fill out a form and hope for approval.

This rule would force schools to let it happen.

Leaders at Sackets Harbor Central still want an evaluation process.

“I still believe that there should be a process in place that is consistent from district to district,” said Jennifer Gaffney, district superintendent and athletic director.

The state just ended the public comment period on the issue.
