There’s a reason direct-to-consumer streaming services are embracing live sports. The genre remains a top draw among U.S. television viewers, trumping any and all entertainment streaming.

New data from Samba TV found that 6.5 million U.S. households watched the Georgia Bulldogs beat the Clemson Tigers on ABC Sept. 1, followed by 5.6 million households watching the Florida Gators lose to the Miami Hurricanes during the L+0D window.

Separately, 4.6 million households watched the 2024 TOUR Championship — Final Round on NBC Sports and the Golf Channel during the L+0D window.

By comparison, 902,000 households watched Prime Video’s “The Lord of the Rings — The Rings of Power” season two first episode during the L+4-day window. The season one premiere episode topped 1 million households in the L+3 window:

Another 1.8 million households watched “The Lord of the Rings The Rings of Power 101” during the L+3D window.

Meanwhile, 634,000 households streamed Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” season four, episode one, during the L+6D window. That was down from 713,000 households streaming “Only Murders in the Building” season three, episode one, during the L+6D window.

The analytics firm tracks viewership through smart TV data and ranks streaming programs based on U.S. household reach.
