Samsung Galaxy Ring 2 Primed For A Near-Imminent Announcement
The Samsung Galaxy Ring is less than a year old but a new version, the Galaxy Ring 2, could be announced within weeks according to the latest report.
Samsung released the original Galaxy Ring in July 2024, and could announce its follow-up on January 22, the rumored date for the company’s next major Unpacked launch event, according to DigiTimes.
The publication claims the Galaxy Ring 2 will improve upon the original with improved sensors and AI features.
New and refreshed AI features will rely on software and processing outside of the ring itself, as smart rings have very limited processor power — due to their lack of space and need to use minimal power.
Samsung Galaxy Ring 2 Features
The first Samsung Galaxy Ring also collects all the obvious metrics for a smart ring, raising the question of what new features the second generation could actually have. Samsung’s original already has blood oxygenation and temperature readings, alongside heart rate and motion detection.
Generational upgrades are going to be particularly tricky within this family, as much of the key work is already done.
Compare a first-generation Oura ring to the current Oura Ring 4 for proof — the original is quite huge next to today’s smart rings.
So what could a Samsung Galaxy Ring 2 offer? A patent filed in mid-2024 detailed a smart ring design with several features not found in the first Galaxy Ring,
These include ECG, not present in any of today’s smart rings, and support for contactless payments.
Both would be useful additions, but likely would not fit into a smart ring as trim as the current Samsung Galaxy Ring. And patents and concrete plans are different things entirely.
This early report also suggests the second ring will have up to week-long battery life, the same as was claimed of the current Galaxy Ring.
It’s worth considering what matters in a ring versus a phone or even a smartwatch, though.
The original Samsung Galaxy Ring is very plain, sensibly so. Decreased thickness from the current 2.6mm may be the most desirable route forward, but perhaps a more bold stylistic play could work too.
Samsung is also expected to announce the Galaxy S25 family and an augmented reality headset at Samsung Unpacked.
