Samsung Releases Major 2024 Feature Boost To More Galaxy Phones
Samsung has confirmed that it will roll out new AI features to older Galaxy phones via its One UI 6.1.1 update.
One UI 6.1.1 was originally bundled with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6, launched in July. This included several Galaxy AI features that were exclusive to those foldable phones. Earlier reports suggested that Samsung would eventually roll out these new features to other devices, which has now happened.
The supported devices include; the Galaxy S24 series, S23 series and S23 FE, Z Fold5, Z Flip5 and Galaxy Tab S9 series.
Owners of those devices will receive a raft of new and updated AI tools, as listed below.
- Interpreter – a real-time language translation service that now includes “listening mode” on the additional devices.
- Chat Assist – now updated with Composer to draft text using generative AI.
- Suggested replies (Galaxy S24, Flip 6 and Fold 6) – generates quick replies to messages to send from a Galaxy Watch 7 or Watch Ultra.
- Note Assist – auto formats, summarizes, grammar checks and translates notes. A new transcript feature does the same thing with voice recordings.
- PDF Overlay Translation – translates text in an overlay in PDF files or other images.
- Sketch To Image -uses generative AI to add more content to a hand-drawn picture.
- Portrait Studio- uses generative AI to turn portrait pictures into different styles, such as a 3D cartoon or watercolor.
- Instant Slow Mo – applies the slow motion effect after a video has been shot while maintaining good image quality.
Alongside this, a newly enhanced Circle To Search is being rolled out to these devices. Google has expanded the feature’s abilities in recent updates, it can now translate text, scan QR codes and there’s a homework help component that creates a step-by-step guide for solving math problems (without actually solving it).
Samsung has confirmed that Circle To Search will also include a Sound Search feature, similar to Shazam, which can identify music when prompted.
For now, Samsung says the new and updated Galaxy AI features are only coming to the flagship 2024 and 2023 devices listed above. But a representative on the Samsung community forums explained in July that more Fold 6 and Flip 6 features would make their way to other devices.
Specifically, Auto Zoom and Flex Camcorder would be pushed to the Galaxy Z Flip 5, while Live Effect could hit the Fold4/Flip4, Fold5/Flip5, Galaxy S22/S23/S24 series, Galaxy S23FE and Galaxy Tab S8/9 series.
We have seen Samsung stagger these updates before, beginning with certain features to more recent phones before rolling them out to older handsets at a later date. That may be the case here, too. We’ll know more in the coming months.
