Saturday Sports: Legendary SU Basketball Coach Jim Boeheim makes a stop in Watertown

WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – Festivities continued Saturday for the grand opening of the new Dick’s Sporting Goods here in Watertown.

Former Syracuse men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim, who retired after 47 years leading the Orange at the end of the 2022-23 season, was on hand to sign autographs and meet some fans.

Boeheim, who won over 1,000 games and led the Orange to the 2003 National Championship, says retirement has been nice but he hasn’t slowed down, staying close to college basketball and the Syracuse program as a special assistant to the Athletic Director.

“It’s good. I’ve been a little too busy. I did about 25 games this year for ESPN so been kind of busy. But it’s been fun. We’ve got our big gala tonight at Turning Stone so there’s always something going on. It’s been good. I don’t miss coaching. It’s a tough time right now in coaching. It’s very challenging to kind of replace your whole team almost every year now. It’s something coaches are able to do, none the less it’s still very tough right now,” said Boeheim.
