Saturday Sports: Rain doesn’t stop busy high school sports weekend

WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – It was a busy Saturday in high school sports despite the rainy conditions, with action on the lacrosse field and the baseball and softball diamonds.

We begin on the lacrosse field as IHC hosted Massena in a Boys’ Frontier League-N.A.C. battle.

Less than a minute in, Massena opens the scoring when Dugga Thompson connects: 1-0 Raiders.

Less than a minute later, Brady Frost goes top shelf, upping the Massena lead to 2-0.

Then it was Thompson with the no look behind the back tally: 3-0 Massena.

Nate Page unloads a rocket and goes top corner for the score as the Raiders expand their lead to 4-0.

Aronhaiwaks Rice picks up the loose ball and tickles twine: 5-0.

Massena goes on to double up IHC 12-6.

At Watertown High, another boys non-league contest as the Cyclones hosted Liverpool.

Watertown strikes first as Nico Spaziani splits the pipes: 1-0 Cyclones.

Tied at 1, Owen O’Donnell takes the feed on the doorstep and finishes: 2-1 Cyclones.

With the score 3-1 Watertown, it’s Kage Loftus with a dart: 4-1 Cyclones.

Watertown goes on to beat Liverpool 17-5.

On the girls’ side, Watertown traveled to Syracuse to meet CBA in a non-league battle.

Watertown was down 2-0 in the 1st when Olivia Macutek dents the back of the net, cutting the CBA lead to 2-1.

Alena Clough goes low for the tally, tying the game at 2.

Tied at 4 in the 2nd, Alex Macutek makes some nice moves and rips yarn: 5-4 Watertown.

Alex Macutek connects again: 6-4 Watertown.

Cyclones beat CBA by a final score of 10-8.

On the softball diamond, Indian River hosted Gouverneur in the Indian River softball spring fling.

At the top of the 4th, the score was 7-1 Wildcats when Renisa Richards singles to right center, plating Arianna Wood. 8-1 Gouverneur.

Then it was Kendra Ashley with the base hit back up the middle that plates Andie Nichols. who beats the throw home: 9-1.

The Wildcats go on to beat Indian River 12-2.

In the other half of the spring fling, Harrisville took on Lowville.

Raiders starter Ana Dening was dealing early, striking out Ava Bearor.

At the top of the 5th, the score was 5-3 Lowville when Maya Nortz comes home on the wild pitch, upping the Lowville lead to 6-3.

Raiders go on to beat Harrisville 7-5.

At J.C.C., a non-league softball doubleheader as Watertown entertained Massena.

The Raiders were down 2-1 in the 3rd when Watertown threatened, but Massena pitcher Emma Gushlaw gets the K to end the inning.

At the top of the 4th, Massena ties it when Montana Nezezon drops a base hit to right field. Kaylie Ledbetter scores, tying the game at 2.

At the bottom of the 4th, Watertown regains the lead as Felicity Del Granado grounds out to 3rd and Julia Marzano scores: 3-2 Cyclones.

Watertown beats Massena 4-2.

Turning to baseball, Watertown took on Indian River in a Frontier League meeting Saturday morning at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds.

At the top of the 1st, Indian River was looking to get something going but Preston Soluri guns down the runner at 2nd.

Watertown starter Daniel Maurer got the strikeout to end the top of the 1st.

At the top of the 2nd, John Flowers was flashing some leather at 3rd.

Cyclones go on to beat Indian River 11-1.
