Saturday Sports: Spring season in high gear for High School, College teams
LISBON, New York (WWNY) – With Frontier League schools beginning their spring break, diamond action from the Northern Athletic Conference topping local action on Saturday.
We start with NAC baseball, Harrisville at Lisbon.
Top of the first, Tanner Sullivan drives the ball to center. Twin brother Nolan Sullivan scores. 1-0 Pirates.
Bottom 1, Isaiah White loops a base hit, plating Luke Gravlin. 1-1.
Top of the third, Tanner Sullivan hits to center, driving home Nolan. 2-1 Pirates.
Bottom 3, Gravlin splashes a ball to left. Gabriel Smith scores. 2-2.
Top 5, Joe Shepard lines of shot to left field. Nolan Sullivan scores again. 3-2 Pirates.
Same inning, Gravlin with a shot to center. Thomas O’Brien scores. It’s 3-3.
Bottom 7, Lisbon the winning run at third and no outs, chance to walk it off. However, Tanner Sullivan sets down three in a row to get out of the jam.
Into the 9th, Joe Schrodt spanks the ball to left, it gets by the outfielder, Lucas Schrodt scores. 4-3 Harrisville.
Aiden Chartrand cranks the ball through the hole. Jackson Jenack scores.
Harrisville beats Lisbon 6-4.
On the softball diamond, Lisbon hosting Harrisville in NAC West action.
Adia Richards drives the ball through the hole and legs out a double.
Ava Bouchey drills a shot past second base, scoring Mary Bonno. It’s 2-0 Lisbon.
Regan Pirie dribbles the ball toward third, Bonno scoots home, extending the lead to 3-0.
Avery Bouchey with an infield pop that drops, everyone’s safe. With an overthrow at third, Bouchey comes home.
Gabrielle Richardson laces the ball along the third base line. Pirie scores from third.
Lisbon blanks Harrisville 6-0.
Saturday kicked off the 2nd annual Spider’s Anti-Bullying Softball Tournament which was taking place at Kostyk Field and the Fairgrounds
The 2 day event raising money for the Northern New York Foundation in honor of Daniel Briggs
Former Buffalo Bills linebacker and 2-time All-Pro Darryl Talley on hand and throwing out the 1st pitch.
Talley says this cause is something that strikes close to home for him.
“They get bullied because somebody thinks that they’re better than them or they’ve got something they want. They want to take it from them. That’s what they wanted to do to me. They wanted to take things from me that I had, and I was taught if it’s mine and I want to let you use it I can. If I don’t, I don’t have to. I don’t have to give it to you. That’s the way my parents raised me, and they raised me to stand up for myself,” said Talley.
Boys non-league lacrosse from Dexter, General Brown hosting Bethlehem.
Lions get on the board first, Gabe Secreti’s pass goes off a defender and in, 1-0 Lions.
With the Lions down 2-1 Ethan McConnell’s blast dents the back of the net, 2-2.
But Bethlehem goes on to beat General Brown 11-10.
On to college action, where 5th ranked St. Lawrence hosted 2nd ranked R.I.T. in Liberty League play.
Saints down 4-nothing in the 2nd when Judge Murphy connects, cutting the RIT lead to 4-1.
Then it’s David Herlihy with the lazer, pulling the Saints to within 2.
Now 6-2 RIT, Ben Hutchinson splits the pipes. Saints down 6-3 at the half.
Saints down 10-5 in the 4th when Murphy tickles twine for 1 of his 4 goals.
But the Saints fall to R.I.T. 12-9.
At Hantz Field in Potsdam, Clarkson met Ithaca in Liberty League action.
Clarkson down 11-8 in the 4th when Thomas Fiebich buries the blast, 11-9 Ithaca.
Sebastian Geiger scores one of his 4 goals a bit later to make it 11-10.
Clarkson ties it when Matt Reilly finds the mark while falling, 11-11.
Tied at 12, Reilly scores what would be the game winner.
Clarkson comes from behind to beat Ithaca 13-12.
