Topline

Scottie Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked golfer, was detained by police while on his way to the PGA Championship Friday morning, following a misunderstanding with officials after a separate traffic incident resulted in a pedestrian’s death.

Key Facts

A police officer attached himself to Scheffler’s car as the golfer tried to drive by him into Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, later requesting Scheffler leave his vehicle before placing him in handcuffs, ESPN reported.

PGA of America delayed the PGA Championship earlier Friday, after a pedestrian walking outside the gate to the golf club was struck and killed by a bus, according to the Louisville Metro Police Department.

The PGA Championship was delayed again shortly after Scheffler—who was scheduled to tee off at 8:48 a.m.—was arrested, delaying the start of the event until 8:35 a.m. ET.
