Selena tribute concert coming to San Antonio in 2025

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Philharmonic Orchestra is bringing “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” to the Majestic Theatre next year for “Selena VIVE!” — a Selena Quintanilla tribute concert.

Award-winning conductor Felipe Tristán will lead the orchestra in honoring the late Tejano singer’s iconic music from Fri. Jan. 3 through Sun. Jan. 5. Grammy-nominated vocalist Isabel Marie Sánchez will perform.

“We’re so very excited, and I’m honored to be a part of the music of Selena, where we can bring the magic and heartfelt music we’ve cherished for years to the Majestic Theater alongside the San Antonio Philharmonic,” Sánchez said.

Tristán is a celebrated conductor from Mexico who has worked with orchestras around the world. He’s currently principal conductor of the Ballet de Monterrey, interim artistic director of the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra, conductor of the precollege Repertory Orchestra at the Manhattan School of Music and creative & artistic consultant of the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance.

His recent work includes conducting the orchestra at the annual Met Gala for the past two years and conducting “The Nutcracker: A Texas Folklorico Story” in San Antonio in early December.

“Selena’s music is as universal as that of any other composer, and the proof is that it remains as alive today as the day it was first created,” Tristán said. “For us, it is an honor to present it with the Philharmonic Orchestra. It speaks to the universality of her artistic legacy.”

“Selena VIVE!” is the only Selena tribute approved by the Quintanilla family, according to Sánchez.

Quintanilla was killed in 1995 at the age of 23. Next year marks 30 years since her tragic death, but her legacy continues to live on and has inspired films, TV shows, books, concerts and more.

A new documentary about the Tejano singer’s life titled “Selena Y Los Dinos” will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2025. She was honored with a posthumous National Medal of Arts in October.
