It was 80 years ago today, June 6th, 1944, when American, British, and Canadian troops landed on the beaches of Normandy in France to liberate western Europe from Nazi Germany during World War II. In addition, soldiers from the 82nd and 101st Airborne parachuted behind enemy lines hours before the beach landings.
U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt, R-Missouri, traveled there to visit the sites of the massive invasion on the 80th anniversary.
“I’m the grandson of a World War Two veteran, a hero. My grandfather was from Tipton, Missouri and served in the European Theater in Europe,” Schmitt told Missourinet. “To go over there as his grandson and honor the men who sacrificed to liberate a continent – save the world – will be an honor and they deserve our respect.”
Schmitt said he’ll be visiting the gravesites of some Missouri servicemen who died at Normandy and will also visit with some D-Day veterans who are still alive. In the above photo, Schmitt met with a World War Two veteran identified as “Dan,” who served in the same unit as Schmitt’s grandfather.
