Shawnee sports complex security measures

It’s been nearly a month since a drive by shooting took place near Shawnee Sports Complex. Visitors and players ran after hearing gunshots. Since then there has been an increased preparedness at the complex. The Kanawha County Commission said it’s working to update safety protocols.

“We’ve made sure that all of our staff members have participated in active shooter training. We’ve actually done those three or four times since the incident,” Salango said.

Commissioner Salango said they have increased patrol at the park and in the Dunbar and Institute area. Crews are also installing exit gates that will automatically lock when closed. These new security measures will continue to remain at Shawnee for the foreseeable future.

This weekend, the Shawnee Sports Complex saw more foot traffic coming in for the 2024 U.S. Youth Soccer Presidents Cup, which kicked off on Friday.

“It’s fine having the officers on site, sometimes in soccer matches parents get really involved in the game so it’s always good to have that presence anyways,” President’s Cup team manager Beth Noss said.

Noss said she was thankful for these new security measures at Shawnee.
