Shelton State baseball prepares for trip to World Series

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) – The Shelton State Community College baseball team is headed to the JUCO World Series.

The Buccaneers wrapped their regular season with an astounding record of 42-16 record followed by the district championship. The world series will begin one week from this Saturday in Grand Junction, Colorado. The Buccaneers will play don’t know who they will play yet, but head coach Bobby Sprowl says they will be ready.

The winning never gets old for long time Coach Sprowl, even though he’s on the eve of making his 7th trip to the junior college World Series.

“You know we got a good group of players, a mixture with guys back from last year’s trip to Grand Junction, so they know what to expect out there and our freshmen are really good kids and players,” said Sprowl. “They blended together and know how to play the game and they play hard.”

Regardless of what happens in Grand Junction, it’s been a magical season for Shelton State.

“The beauty of this, I got elected to the Junior College Baseball Hall of Fame this year, so they’ll have a big banquet out there honoring the two coaches. Luckily our team won this year and I told the team I’m going to Grand Junction for sure so it’s up to you guys whether you come or not, so they’re a little excited about that,” said Sprowl.

The team will practice a few days here at home before flying out to Colorado next Tuesday. The tournament will be double elimination in front of anywhere between 9,000-14,000 fans.

“It is a special thing for them,” Sprowl said.

A special thing with the hope of adding another banner on the wall.

The Shelton State Buccaneers have 35 players on the team and all will make the trip to Grand Junction.
