Shelton State Community College offers new free jobs training program

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) – Alabama employers are in dire need of skilled labor and one west Alabama community college is meeting those needs with a special hands-on job training program.

We’re talking about a range of jobs from carpentry, heavy equipment operator, and mental health workers.

This is where Shelton State comes into play. The college is offering hands-on training as part of the rapid training program called Skills For Success.

School leaders say so far, around 300 students have taken advantage of the program.

“The Alabama Community College System has set up something called the Innovation Center based out of Decatur, and what that really is doing developing rapid skills training for in-demand jobs across the state, so we listened to businesses and industries, we’re developing quick entry level access training that you can get some quick bare bones skills in a high demand field,” said Shelton State president Dr. Jonathan Koh.

Shelton State leaders say the program is free, no cost to the students, thanks to the Alabama Legislature.
