Shooter from Pavilions Shopping Plaza sentenced to 11 years in prison

LAFAYETTE, Ind. ― Terrence Howard fired several shots at a car May 15, 2023, while standing in a bank parking lot in the Pavilions Shopping Plaza, and Tuesday, Howard learned he’ll be in prison for 11 years for his crimes.

Howard, 22, of Romney, pleaded guilty to attempted aggravated battery, criminal recklessness and unlawful carrying of a handgun by a felon.

With credit for good behavior, Howard will have to serve 75% of the 11-year sentence ― or a little more than eight years. He’s been jailed for the last 15 months awaiting his fate in court, so that time will count against his sentence.

After firing the shots at the gray car as it started to drive away with the green light, Howard got onto his bicycle and started trying to leave the area. However, Lafayette police officers were swarming the area, and Howard was detained.

Several witnesses identified Howard as the shooter, and the bank’s surveillance camera had video of him firing at the car, according to prosecutors.

The driver of the car that Howard was shooting at later told police he didn’t know Howard was shooting at his car. He told police he was leaving the shopping center and crossed Creasy Lane into the parking lot east of the Pavilions Shopping Plaza at the time of the shooting.

Howard pleaded guilty last month, according to online court records. When he was sentenced Tuesday, charges of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, battery with a deadly weapon, intimidation and unlawful carrying a handgun were dismissed.
