Since 2016, 28 million hectares of forest have been cut down every year on average. For perspective, that’s one football field of forest lost every second of every day over each passing year. What’s worse, is that this forest loss also contributes nearly five billion tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year, which measures up to nearly 10% of annual human emissions. So how can we slow down deforestation at home?

Shopping sustainably is a great start. Supporting companies that responsibly handle their crops or use sustainable practices can go a long way in changing the way that we approach harvesting from our environment. This might look like buying products with less outer packaging, avoiding excessive products containing palm oil (a leading source of deforestation), opting for wooden or paper products before plastic, purchasing from local farmers who practice sustainable agriculture, etc. Research what products work best for both you and the environment and keep up with the KPWB blog page for more information on shopping sustainably.
